Pediatric Occupational Therapy helps children build the underlying skills they need to fully participate in the activities of childhood — from holding a crayon and tying shoes to managing a busy classroom and joining a family meal without overwhelm.
What Pediatric Occupational Therapy Is
Despite the name, occupational therapy for children has nothing to do with employment. A child’s “occupations” are the things they do every day — playing, learning, eating, dressing, socializing, sleeping. When something gets in the way of those activities, a pediatric Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) is trained to figure out why and to design fun, evidence-based interventions that help your child move forward.
Who Benefits From Pediatric OT
Children of any age can benefit from occupational therapy. Families across Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Fort Pierce reach out to us for help with:
- Sensory processing differences — over- or under-responsiveness to sound, touch, movement, light, taste, or smell that interferes with daily life.
- Fine motor delays — difficulty with grasping, manipulating small objects, using scissors, or building strength in the hands.
- Gross motor challenges — trouble with coordination, balance, body awareness, or motor planning.
- Handwriting and school-readiness skills — letter formation, pencil grasp, sizing, spacing, and visual-motor integration.
- Self-care independence — dressing, fasteners, tooth brushing, toileting, feeding, and other activities of daily living.
- Attention and self-regulation — building the skills children need to settle their bodies, manage transitions, and engage with learning.
- Feeding and oral-motor concerns — picky eating, texture aversions, or oral-motor skill building (in coordination with other providers where appropriate).
What to Expect
Every family begins with a free consultation call so we can hear what is going on, answer your questions, and decide together whether an evaluation is the right next step. The evaluation itself blends parent interview, standardized assessments, and structured play observation. From there, your OT builds an individualized plan with measurable goals and walks you through it in plain language.
Sessions are play-based and naturalistic. We use the activities your child loves — obstacle courses, art, building, sensory bins, animal walks, dramatic play — to work on the foundational skills that show up in handwriting, focus, regulation, and independence. Parents are invited to join, observe, or coordinate with their therapist regularly so the strategies that work in session carry into the rest of life.
Our Treasure Coast Service Area
Our contracted Occupational Therapists serve families throughout Vero Beach and the rest of Indian River County, Sebastian and Roseland, and Fort Pierce in northern St. Lucie County. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate school-age children, working parents, and families managing multiple appointments.
OT and ABA: How They Work Together
Many of the children we serve work with both an Occupational Therapist and an ABA team. When that happens, our clinicians actively coordinate — aligning goals, sharing observations, and making sure your child experiences a consistent, supportive approach across providers rather than a confusing patchwork.
